The Ideation To Launch- I2L is a model that any firm can employ/deploy to ideate, design, develop and launch successful products quickly or as per a target launch plan, meet with customer requirements and delight them too. In addition the process also creates a funnel of new products that can be developed and launched progressively. The model is a blend of innovation paradigms, product development best practices, concurrent engineering and process innovation.

The challenge for any business to survive, retain its edge and grow to meet market demands, business metrics and employee satisfaction is to ensure continuous profitability. To a level the existing operations can be optimized to squeeze more bottom line though on a limited life cycle as products keep getting obsolete, in view of new technologies, competition and customer changing and emergent needs.

A start up would need a method of how to convert an idea to successful product or service, launch it and sustain the business and for an existing organization a need would be to diagnose the current way, address the gaps and improve the NPD (New Product Development) method in line with best practices in order to shorten the ‘time to market’, meet or exceed customer requirements/usage expectations and ensure business revenues as planned or more.

TAO methodology for NPD evolves on five stages covering:

  1. Ideation phase: how to generate new ideas, the platforms, the themes, using systems of systems and Market Technology/Products Matrix and then how to distill these ideas to the next stage and forming a cross functional team for concurrent engineering or development. This phase creates in addition a funnel of products for the immediate present and emerging future.
  2. Design or Formulation phase: the design/formulation process by use of various transfer functions and techniques like House of Quality, 3 D Technology Matrix, I-TRIZ, Design for Various functions (DFX) like manufacturing, assembly/blending, service, cost and Failure Modes, leading to quick generation of various options/variants and then concept selection methods. This phase early enough covers proof of concept, storyboarding and sample/prototype development.
  3. Optimize phase: This starts with Failure Mode in process parameters and optimizing both the design/formulation specifications to modes of manufacture and equipment designs/adaptation with pilot batch production
  4. Validate or Establish phase: In this phase the bulk or mass production process parameters are established and validate with respect to consistency in quality, capacities and productivity.
  5. Launch Phase: In this phase the build up for the launch especially for consumer goods is planned and then what should be the stabilized volume, logistics plans and after sales service as applicable.
